Before our recent journey with Touring Cars, we already knew a little about life in small spaces. Years ago, we travelled with a trailer while living in Dubai, and later we spent an extended period living aboard a sailboat in Greece.
Every experience taught us something different. But they all had one thing in common: comfort is measured differently when your home moves with you.
Many people imagine motorhome travel as the ultimate holiday. Park by the sea, open a bottle of wine, watch the sunset and simply relax.
The reality is a little different.
A motorhome gives you incredible freedom, but it also asks you to participate. You quickly become the driver, the cook, the cleaner, the navigator and occasionally even the technician. You learn how the fresh water system works, how to empty the grey water tank, when to refill gas, how the heating behaves on colder nights and where you can safely spend the night.
There is always something to learn, especially during your first trip.
And honestly, that’s part of the charm.
You stop consuming your surroundings and start living in them.
One thing we noticed almost immediately was how little we wanted to think about laundry.
After a full day of driving, hiking, swimming, photographing beautiful places or simply enjoying the outdoors, household chores become the last thing on your mind. Instead, you begin appreciating products that simply work.
Every morning we would open the windows, let fresh air flow through the motorhome, shake the bedding and continue with our day. Hemp naturally regulates moisture and releases odours efficiently, so the bedding stayed remarkably fresh between washes. Instead of constantly worrying about maintenance, we could focus on what we came for — the journey itself.
The same happened with our hemp towels.
Originally designed as sauna towels, they quickly became one of the most useful items we packed. The large towel accompanied us almost everywhere. After a swim it became a beach towel. During cooler evenings it became a wrap around the shoulders. Sometimes it worked as an extra sheet, sometimes as a picnic blanket, and more than once it simply became a comfortable place to sit while watching the sea.
That versatility reminded us that in a motorhome, every item should deserve its place. Space is limited, so the best products are the ones that serve more than one purpose.
One of our customers recently suggested adding a third towel size specifically for backpackers. We loved the idea. When you travel with everything you own, multifunctionality becomes even more valuable.
Another lesson from the road is that finding where to spend the night becomes an adventure of its own. Some travellers search for quiet forests, others choose campsites with full facilities, while many follow the wind and stay close to beaches popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers. One of our favourite stops was Silversand in Hanko, where the landscape, the sea and the community create a unique atmosphere for people who simply love being outdoors.
By the end of each day, after driving, cooking dinner and watching the light slowly disappear over the water, one thing mattered more than almost anything else.
A comfortable bed.
Not because we needed luxury.
Because we needed recovery.
Natural, breathable bedding feels different after a day spent outside. Your body notices it immediately. The same is true for a good towel that dries quickly, packs easily and becomes part of your daily routine without asking for attention.
That is what we want Makuu to be.
Not just beautiful textiles.
But thoughtful companions for life in motion.
Whether your home is an apartment, a cabin, a sailboat or a motorhome, comfort should travel with you.
