When we talk about durability, we often think about something staying exactly the same.
The same colour, the same surface, the same feeling as the first day.
But natural materials work differently. They are not designed to stay untouched — they are designed to be lived with.
This photo shows the same Makuu 100% hemp fabric in overcast grey: one brand new, and one after two years of everyday use and approximately 200 washes.
And something interesting happens.
The fabric does not lose its character. It changes.
Over time, hemp fibres naturally relax. The surface becomes softer, the touch becomes smoother, and the fabric develops a more lived-in feeling. The colour may gently fade, just like many natural materials that experience years of washing, sunlight and everyday life.
For us, this is not a flaw. It is part of the beauty of natural fibres.
Why does hemp soften with use?
Hemp is one of the strongest natural textile fibres. Historically, it was trusted for demanding environments — from sails and ropes at sea to durable everyday fabrics — because of its strength and ability to handle changing conditions.
But strength does not mean stiffness forever.
With washing and use, the fibres become more flexible. The fabric opens up, moves more easily and develops the softness many hemp lovers appreciate.
It is not artificial softness created to impress on the first touch.
It is softness created by time.
How to help your hemp age beautifully
Hemp does not need complicated care. Like many natural materials, it simply responds to how it is treated.
Wash with mild detergent, avoid harsh chemicals and fabric softeners, and give the fabric enough space to move freely during washing.
Tumble drying on a gentle setting can help soften hemp fibres and create the relaxed, velvet-like touch many people love.
Especially in very dry indoor climates — such as Nordic homes during winter — hemp can temporarily feel more crisp. Natural fibres react to their surroundings, and sometimes the fabric reflects the environment around it.
With moisture, movement and use, it naturally relaxes again.
Designed to age, not to be replaced
We live in a world where many things are created to look perfect when purchased, but not necessarily to improve with use.
At Makuu, we believe the opposite.
The best natural materials collect time.
They become softer, more personal and carry the story of where they have been — from everyday homes and quiet cabins to boats, yachts and coastal spaces exposed to changing climates.
This is where 100% hemp fabric truly shows its character.
Around water, humidity and constant use, materials are tested differently. Bedding is not just something that looks beautiful for a moment — it needs to breathe, dry, feel comfortable against the skin and become part of daily life.
After two years of use and hundreds of washes, our hemp bed linen reminds us why we chose this fibre in the first place.
Not because it stays untouched.
Because it lives with you.
