For two years, we lived on the road—literally. We travelled the UAE and spent countless days and nights in a caravan, exploring new places and experiencing both: the beauty and the challenges of life in a moving home. After that, we transitioned to life on a boat, where we spent another almost two years. It was during these years of nomadic living that we learned some of the most valuable lessons about comfort, sustainability, and making a home wherever we went.
Caravan life is unique. We had the freedom to travel wherever the road took us, but it came with its own set of challenges. Space was limited, and creating a comfortable environment was tricky, especially when we constantly battled humidity, cramped conditions, and unpredictable weather: the intense heat and humidity or cold desert nights. But it was also filled with beauty—the open road, waking up to new views every day, and the joy of living minimally.
When we moved to boat life, many of the same challenges followed us. The Mediterranean climate where we sail is characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Living in a humid environment on the water required extra care in creating a cozy, healthy living space. That’s when we started thinking about how to improve it. We needed something practical, sustainable, and most importantly, comfortable.
This is when we discovered hemp fabric. We began learning about its incredible properties—the ones we always mention, and also the history: hamp was always there, thousands of years. It was the perfect solution for life on the move. After trying hemp bed linens on the boat, we immediately noticed a difference in comfort. The linens were comfort and dry, staying fresh long, they look always good, they are durable, and ideal for the humid conditions we lived in. The experience was so transformative that we knew we had found something special.
Inspired by our journey, we wanted to share this discovery with others. Together with an enthusiastic friend who studied ecological design in the university in Finland, we came into the idea, and together, we created Makuu—a brand dedicated to providing sustainable, ecological, and beautiful hemp textiles for sophisticated lifestyle. Our products are designed not just for those living in caravans or boats, but for anyone who values sustainable comfort. Whether you’re on the move or living by the sea, or having kids and dogs, our bed linens offer the perfect balance of practicality and luxury.
Today, as we visit the motorhome exhibition in Lahti, we’re excited to share our story. Our journey has been one of discovery and passion, and through Makuu, we hope to bring that same sense of sustainable comfort to others.
