Why Makuu makes sense for superyachts
Fine hemp linen for demanding marine environments
Makuu was shaped by life on the water — not as a design concept, but as a response to real marine conditions: constant humidity, limited space, frequent laundering, and the need for consistent, high-quality rest on board.
On superyachts, bedding is not a decorative element. It directly affects guest experience, crew wellbeing, and daily operations.
Hemp linen offers a set of properties that are particularly relevant in the superyacht environment. It is naturally breathable and antibacterial, helping to manage moisture and hygiene in conditions where ventilation and humidity control are constant challenges. The fibre regulates temperature effectively, remaining comfortable across changing climates — from warm Mediterranean waters to colder northern routes.
Durability is critical on board.
Unlike cotton, hemp fibres strengthen and soften with repeated washing instead of breaking down. This makes hemp particularly suitable for yachts with high rotation, frequent laundering, and long operational seasons.
Makuu works with fine hemp linen developed for demanding use rather than visual impact. Sheets are produced to order, adapting to non-standard bed dimensions common on superyachts. The focus is on performance, longevity, and tactile comfort — qualities that become more valuable over time rather than wearing out.
Sustainability in the superyacht sector is no longer optional, but it must not compromise quality. Hemp naturally meets both expectations: it requires significantly less water than cotton, is fully biodegradable, and has a low environmental footprint, while maintaining a level of comfort appropriate for five-star interiors.
Makuu exists where material performance meets understated luxury.
Quiet, reliable, and designed to work — night after night, wash after wash.
Makuu was not developed from a trend report or a marketing brief.
It grew out of lived experience on boats, where sleep quality quickly becomes a matter of function, not preference.
My focus has been simple: to create a comfortable bedding solution for life on board that performs reliably in demanding marine conditions while remaining calm, tactile, and honest in its materiality. (co-founder of Makuu, Sofia)
