Conscious Design for a Better Sleep

Makuu is not designed for every space.

It works best where materials are truly used — not just seen.

Over time, this has become clearer to us not through strategy, but through real collaborations and conversations.

Spaces in motion

One of the most natural environments for Makuu has been mobile living.

We have seen this through our collaboration with Touring Cars, where our textiles were placed inside motorhomes — spaces where comfort is not an extra, but a necessity.

In these environments:

  • space is limited

  • climate changes

  • materials are in constant use

There is no room for decorative choices that don’t perform.

We also connected with travellers living on the road — including a couple behind Matkailumersu, documenting life in a motorhome. Their way of living reflects something we deeply relate to: simplicity, movement, and intentional use of what you own.

Life at sea

Our direction has also naturally moved towards boats and marine environments.

We are currently in conversations with Finnish boat and yacht manufacturers, exploring how textiles can better serve life on the water — where humidity, salt, and limited space make material choice even more critical.

On a boat, comfort becomes very real:

  • sleep quality matters

  • moisture needs to be managed

  • materials must adapt, not resist

This is where hemp makes sense.

Creative and hospitality environments

Makuu has also found its place in more curated, design-led contexts.

Through collaborations such as Sugar Helsinki, we have seen how textile can become part of a broader atmosphere — not as decoration, but as a quiet layer that supports the overall experience.

In these spaces, it is not only about function, but about balance. A balance between aesthetics and tactility, between visual calm and physical comfort, between how a space looks and how it feels to live in.

What connects all of them

At first glance, these worlds may seem different — motorhomes, boats, creative spaces.

But in reality, they share something essential.

They are environments where space is used consciously, where materials are experienced every day, and where comfort is not something taken for granted, but something that needs to be created.

In all of them, what touches the body matters.

Where Makuu belongs

Makuu belongs in spaces where life is actually lived.

Not only in still, perfectly styled interiors,

but in places where:

  • people move

  • climates shift

  • materials are tested by real use

This includes:

  • boats and yachts

  • motorhomes and vans

  • cabins and remote homes

  • small hospitality projects

  • and private spaces where less, but better, is the priority

Looking ahead

We are not trying to be everywhere.

We are interested in working with people and projects that understand the role of material beyond appearance — where textile is part of how a space feels, functions, and supports rest.

At the same time, it is becoming clear where things are moving.

Less excess.

Fewer things.

More attention to quality, longevity and how materials actually perform in everyday life.

Spaces are becoming smaller, more intentional.

Movement is becoming a way of living, not an exception.

In this shift, what we choose to surround ourselves with matters more than ever.

Makuu is built for that direction.

If this resonates

If you are working on a space where materials matter —

whether it’s a boat, a motorhome, a cabin or a considered interior —

we are always open to conversation.

Not every project is the right fit.

But when it is, it tends to become clear quite quickly.
