how movement shaped the way we live and rest

The word nomad comes from the Greek “νομάς” — one who does not stay in one place, one who moves. A herder. A wanderer.
But it’s not just about physical movement. It’s about an inner orientation. A way of living.
A capacity to go in search of stable freedom.

It started long before the internet

For thousands of years, humans lived in motion.
Tribes followed animals, searched for shade, water, land where they could breathe.

Later came caravan routes — on camels, horses, and foot — across deserts, steppes, and mountain passes.
Then maritime routes expanded — and with them came ships, sails, and global navigation.

Hemp was present through all of it:
– woven into sails and rope on ships
– used for bags, tents, and travel garments
– breathable, mold-resistant, insulating, and durable

For centuries, hemp was one of the most essential fibers for those on the move.
It held up under salt, wind, sun, and moisture — without losing strength.
Sailors relied on it. Traders packed their goods in it. Nomadic cultures used it to build shelter on the go.

It required little water to grow, thrived without chemicals, and left a minimal footprint — long before sustainability became a term.

A material built for travel. Trusted across generations and climates.

Modern nomads

Today we have technology, satellites, cloud access.
We can work from anywhere.
But the essence remains — to live lightly, simply, with little, but with meaning.

It’s not about escape. It’s about choosing.

And when you live between seas, languages, borders — what you touch every day becomes essential.
What stays close to your body matters.

That’s why we created Makuu

We began on a boat.
There was sun, wind, salt on the skin — and the simple desire to sleep in real fabric.
No synthetics, no sticky feeling — just natural textures and colors.

We wanted to feel the natural world, especially while resting.
Those who live in humid climates, or sweat during sleep, will immediately feel the comfort of hemp against the skin — no matter the air temperature.
A feeling of being held. Gently.
