Ma Has a Character: How to Properly Care for Your Hemp Linens

Makuu™ Community Blog

At Makuu™, we value every piece of customer feedback. Recently, one of our early buyers reported that the hemp bed linens felt “super rough” after being washed twice before use. First of all, let us inform you that our linens are ready for use immediately after purchase. They were washed at the factory, without the use of additional substances for storage. Curious about the situation, we asked whether the care instructions had been followed, as improper washing can lead to an unexpected rough texture.

This situation highlights an important truth about hemp fabric: our beloved Ma has a strong character and doesn’t like being treated poorly. When cared for correctly, it becomes softer with each wash, but incorrect handling can cause it to feel rough.

Why Hemp Linens Can Feel Rough After Washing

Hemp, like linen, is a natural fiber that shares many qualities, but with its own distinct personality. Hemp fibers consist of long, thin capillaries that swell when exposed to water, making the fabric highly absorbent. This property is great for breathability but also presents a risk:

Insoluble detergent particles can get trapped in the swollen fibers during washing. As the fabric dries and the capillaries contract, these trapped particles cause friction, damaging the fibers and leaving the fabric feeling rough.

To avoid this, always use well-dissolving liquid detergents. If the detergent doesn’t dissolve properly, like some powder detergents with zeolites, it can damage the fibers. Choose gentle detergents made for delicate fabrics for the best results.

Key Rules for Washing Hemp Linens

To prevent this roughness and maintain the softness of hemp linens, follow these essential care tips:

Pre-Soak: Wet the hemp fabric completely before washing to help reduce wrinkles and remove loose fibers.

Use Liquid Detergents: Opt for liquid detergents or gels, as these are pre-dissolved and do not contain particles that could get trapped in the fibers. Avoid powder detergents, especially those with zeolites, as they don’t dissolve fully and can damage the fabric.

Wash on Short Cycle with Temperature 40-60°C is ideal: Higher temperatures can damage the fibers, causing roughness.

Tumble Dry: We recommend tumble drying on “linen” setting for the best results.

Drying on the air: Straighten the linens before drying to minimize wrinkles. Hang to dry in the shadow to remain the color, or in the sun for “Vintage look”.

Embrace it’s natural wrinkles! Hemp fabric has a naturally relaxed look, so no ironing is required unless wanted.

Gentle Ironing: If hemp textiles are wrinkled after washing, they can be ironed on a “linen” setting while still slightly damp for extra softness.

Storing: It’s important to store hemp products in breathable conditions, such as in fabric bags, to avoid plastic containers that block airflow and can trap moisture.

Remote Homes: If you are away from the city and there is no possibility to do your laundry, don’t worry! Instead of washing, you can just air out your linens for some time in the sun and air, make it fresh again.

Conclusion

When Hemp is treated with care, it rewards you with a softer, more luxurious feel with each use. Always follow the care instructions, and your hemp linens will not only become softer but also remain strong and durable for years to come. Choose hemp for its sustainability, breathability, and natural comfort, and enjoy.
